Per the Chicago Newspaper Interocean of May 3, 1873, under the heading of “Dubuqure Items”: “Dubuque, Iowa, May 1, — While a party were hunting near Sinsinawa Mound, Ill, today, the gun of W. Wenden was accidentally discharged, the contents, a charge of pigeon shot, entering the back of his brother in law, a young man of 21 named Clement Welp, inflicting a mortal wound.”
