Notes for Albert Zemke
ALBERT ZEMKE
Albert Carl Christopher (Albert) Zemke is one of the tragic figures in this family history.
Born in 1865 at Wausau, Wisconsin, Albert was baptized the following year at a Lutheran Church there. For future genealogists tracing the Zemke and Juedes lines, the sponsors at his baptism were Christoph Juedes, Albert Zemke, and Wilhelmina Zemke (possibly uncles and aunts). His childhood was spent in Wisconsin and in Freistatt, Missouri, where he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church on April 10, 1881. As a young man, he moved to Saline County, (Sweet Springs) Missouri where “he carried on several business enterprises and followed the carpenter’s trade,” according to his 1947 obituary in the Sweet Springs Herald.
On September 5, 1900, Albert married Miss Maggie Norman of Sweet Springs, but their joy was very short-lived. Maggie (Norman) Zemke’s obituary, published less than 10 months after their wedding, states that “A few days after their marriage, Mr. Zemke took sick and for six of seven months was unable to be out. The nursing of, and anxiety for, her husband brought on her sickness of which she died.”
Maggie Zemke died June 29, 1901, at the age of 22, and was interred at Antioch Cemetery, Sweet Springs. Albert never re-married, had no children, lived alone for many years after his wife’s death, and then stayed with his mother after she moved to Sweet Springs. The newspaper in 1947 reported that “in recent years he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Lena Wallhausen.”
Albert died November 24, 1947. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church in Sweet Springs.
