Notes for Edmund BEAUPRE
[Jrroller.FTW]

Beaupre Hall was a great house which stood in a spacious park
on the northern side of Outwell. After the 1066 battle of
Hastings, the plot of land was given to one of William the
Conqueror's knights, Sir Nicholas de BeauprÈ, who built the
hall. Throughout the centuries the Hall was built and rebuilt
in the Tudor, Jacobean, and Georgian architecture styles. The
Hall ceased to be a family residence in 1939. During World War
II the hall was used as an RAF base, searching for enemy
aircraft. After the war BeauprÈ Hall fell into disrepairs and
in 1960 an attempt was made to preserve the Gate Towers for
posterity. At the top of the gateposts were a pair of falcons.
Ancient stories said they use to fly over the village of
Outwell, when the moon was in the sky. Their journey often took
them to the village bakery where many loaves of bread went
missing. The remains of BeauprÈ Hall were removed in 1966 along
with the gate houses which became unsafe. The building was
replaced by a new BeauprÈ Hall for the elderly.
