. After returning to Costa Mesa, it was only a short time later thatZulo, his mother becam e very ill and the doctor recommended a drierclimate. So it was decided that, when Ralph wa s only about ninemonths old, the family would remove to Bakersfield and live on hisgrand-fa thers farm. They gave up the store in Costa Mesa and rentedout
their home there.

The history of the family from this point is discussed in Ralph'sbrother's history. Ralp h went to grade school at the Panama Schoolnear Bakersfield, Cal. and from 1942-3 attended K ern County UnionHigh School in Bakersfield, California, then finished at TehachapiHigh Scho ol in the spring of 1946. He entered the sevice andcompleted a tour of duty in the U.S. Coa st Guard, serving in Alaska.

After returning home, Ralph worked about 2 years with the Standard OilCo., Service Station D ivision in the Taft and Tehachapi Area. In1950 he joined the local 460 Plumbers Union and s erved hisapprenticeship from 1950-1955, worked for Smetizer Co., and Gundlach'sPlumbing. I n 1956 Ralph worked for Owen Clark as a journeymanplumber, also he worked at the Edwards Ai r Force Base building rockettesters. Then for two years helping in the building of the Bish opElementary School. In 1958 to 1963 Ralph was the Superintendent ofPlumbing for all the 3 00 houses and shopping center built in KernCity nere Bakersfield. He helped build West Hig h School, Alpha BetaMarket, KERO T.V. Station, and Sands Restaurant in Bakersfield from1963 - 1966.

In 1966 he served as estimator for Gundlach's Plumbing Co., until 1982which included many o f the large contracts in the Bakersfield Area.From 1983-1987 was estimator for Etter Plumbi ng.

During this same period, Ralph gained a class D vocational credentialto teach plumbing and f or 28 years taught in Local 460 plumbingappreticeship program 1956-1984. Also taught course s of plumbingcode to City and County inspectors, 1986-1987, and is again teachingplumbing a pprenticeship (1989). Received his credentials fromPurdue University. Ralph hopes to kee p on working and he is notinterested in retiring.

He has always been interested in the Boy Scout program and has alwaysbeen very active in tha t endevor. He was honored when he receivedthe Silver Beaver award at a dinner in his honor . This is thehighest award you can receive at the local councel leval.

Ralph died at home on part of the old Emerson Farm 5 Jan 1999. Hepurchased this from his mo ther. He lived on this farm from the timehe was about 9 month old until his death except fo r a short time hefollowed his parents to Monolith Calififornia, during World War II.When h e left the U.S. Coast Guard he moved back on the farm and livedthere the rest of his life . Dedicated to the Boy Scout program, hebrought his boys up as believing in the standard s of the Boy Scouts.Ralph was 70 year and 11 month at death.
