Virgil W. Welp, 85, died Friday, January 16, 2004 at Mercy Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, January 19 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2004.
Virgil was born in Haverhill, and was the owner of Grain and Feed Elevators in Iowa. He served in the Coast Guard during WWII. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Serra Club, Chicago Board of Trade, and a board member of the National Grain and Feed Association. He liked to golf and was an avid Cubs fan as well as a volunteer for many organizations.
Virgil is survived by his son, Greg Welp of Dubuque; daughters, Victoria Grossestreuer of Downers Grove, IL, and Denise Stephens of Ft. Wayne, IN; sisters, Doris Neuroth of Marshalltown and Audrey Dankbar of Ames; brothers, Cyril Welp of Marshalltown and Leon Welp of Haverhill; five grandchildren, Laura Welp, Anne Grossestreuer, Ted Grossestreuer, Nick Stephens and Jacki Stephens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m., Sunday with family present from 2 to 5 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 5 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Mercy Hospice Education Fund or the Holy Trinity Foundation.
