Notes for Colon Christoph Heinrich Brockhoff
Christoph emigrated to America with his wife and his five children, on August
2, 1834. In the Osnabruck Stadt Archive, the records of his
Auswanderung(emmigration) was found. These records stated:
Christopher was 39 years old. His occupation/title was "Kolon", an old German
word for Landowner. The word Colonel is derived from this word.
He left with his wife and 3 sons and two daughters. Also noted wasthat he
left with 1000 "Reichstaler". This word was the root of the USDollar. It was
the form of currency used by the German Empire(Reich) in 1834.It also stated
that he emigrated without a passport. The original records may be photocopied
at the Archiv in Osnabruck. Following is the information required to retrieve
the original emmigration permission papers:
Alte Archiv-Sign.: 17969
Bestell-Nr: Rep 360 os NR. 9
Satz Nr: 256756

Verbal family information says that his son Heinrich (born in 1827) was seven
at the time of emigration.

On 10/31/1990 Glenn Kruse, wife Vera, and Bertha Hehman visited the former home
of Christoph in Indiana. It had large beams in place of normal ceiling joists of today's
homes. His home had an upper bedroom under repair that day and onecould view
the hand axe marks on all the beams showing that they were made byhand. The
studding was of very rough sawing of some kind and these were held together
pieces of construction by wooden pegs still serving their purpose. The home is
in Jackson Co. on winding roads south of Borchers church and the house was back
in a lane. His son, also named "Chris Brockhoff" never married and on a 1900
map his name was still written in as owner of this land. The house is still
being lived in as of this day.

On March 30, 1993 Dennis Kruse visited the Brockhoff farm in Germany that was
the former home of Christoph Brockhoff. It is on Brockhoffsweg near Darum
which is a very small village near Belm Germany. These towns are quite near
Osnabruck. To great surprise, a building on the hof was being renovated at the
time. It was a small Fachwerk (timbered with white plaster) building that had
been used as a corn crib. This was referred to as a"Speiker" (Storehouse).
On the outside of the building carved in timber was the name of Christopher's assumed grandfather, Johan Christofer Brockhoff and Anna Gerdrude Meners and the number "7A" (Note that Christoph was born in
"Haus #7"). Also carved in the timber was the date 1743. The family still living at the hof are named Brockhoff, but it is
assumed that their ancesters (originally named Stiegelmayer) acquired the Brockhoff name when Christoph sold the hof and emigrated to America.
