Harriet’s Obituary:

“Mrs. Harriet E. Smith, 96 year old pioneer of Scott County died in her home, Rural Route 1. Bettendorf, two miles east of Pleasant Valley, this afternoon after a short illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in a log cabin at the site of her present home on November 28,1839 and received her education in the Sycomore School House, which was the first school house in this territory. Her father William Conrow, was the School’s first teacher. Her parents, William Conrow and Sarah Conrow were among the earliest settlers in this County.

She was married to Ira Fuller Smith of Port Byron on Aug. 21, 1858, the couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1908. Her husband was a Mexican War veteran. The couple lived in LeClaire Iowas until 1858 when they moved to Keokuk county where they engaged in farming until 1901 when they returned to this county.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Christian Church and until recently was an active member of the Sycamore Sewing Circle.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Rodella Miller and Mrs. Hanna L. Roller, both of Rural Route 1 Bettendorf, four grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. The body will be removed to the McGinnis Funeral Home where furneral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire.”
