Harold Tallman, the personable director of choral music at WayneUniversity,
has the tradition of middle western American music in his blood andthere are
many people who think that the voice of America sins best through itsmiddle
western register.

He was born on a farm in Greene County, Iowa, of pioneer settlers inthat
wind-swept land. His father and Uncle were the first two settlers inGreene
County, Iowa.

His earliest recollections are of the old reed organ in the parlor ofthe farm home. Aroun d it would be gathered first the members of thefamily. His father was a passable baritone . His mother played pianoand so did his sister, Dora.

His older brother, Arthur, played the mandolin divinely and we oldtimers
surely remember when the mandolin was something to reckon with.

The young people from all the farms about came bouncing over theprairie to be one with the S unday music sessions in the Tallmanparlor. This was the sure way of tradition.

Eventually the family moved off the farm to Grand Junction and, at theage of
nine years, Harold found himself with a slide trombone almost as tallas he.
But he played it so well that he was drafted for the town band.

In High School and in Simpson College, Indianola, Indiana he becamemore in
demand. Harold went to Long Beach, California and spent a summerseason with
Trombonist Hervert Clark. During this same period his voice developedas well as his Trombon e. After playing and directing many bands, in1937 he came to Wayne University. At Wayne h e developed a choir tobe proud of.

While serving as Director of Vocal Music at Wayne State University age52
Harold died November 26, 1962. This was a result of injuriessuffered
November 14 in an accident.
