Acording to the Halberbe document, Arnold studied for a while at the Ratsgymnasium (College prepartory high school) and then became a “Kaufmann” businessman or salesman. In 1804 he writes from Amsterdam, a letter to his brother, Christian Menke that he had business financial problems and will emmigrate to Surinam, Guyana in South America. He states that the captain of a ship tells him it will cost him 300 Dutch Guilders. Since this letter, no one has heard from him. There was speculation that he might have taken his own life. On 6 Sept 1840 he was declared dead. And the death certificate stated that he still owned some land, ( 2 Morgen 115 Qu. Rutan on the Balserbachwiese and 1 Morgen 15 Qu.Rutan in Kukenort, and 97 Qu. Ruten in Vosland.
