Wilma P. Porter, 85, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at a Topeka retirement center.

She was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Neosho Falls, to Joseph and Lena Meyer Prewett.

She moved to Topeka and was raised by Edgar W. and Gertrude Degan.

She graduated from Topeka Catholic High School and was employed by Shawnee County Probate Court. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Junior Social Service, Junior League, Stormont-Vail Hospital auxiliary and Mulvane Art Society. She received a Special Volunteer Recognition award from the United Way for 40 years of volunteer service.

She married James W. "Jim" Porter Aug. 14, 1942, in Wickford, R.I. He survives.

Other survivors include a son, William E. Porter, Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Melissa P. Masoner, Topeka, and Jaime Porter, Waterville, Maine; two sisters, Frances Sunday, David City, Neb., and Suzanne O'Brien, Litchfield Park, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Cremation is planned. Memorial mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 2700 S.E. Virginia, 66605; or the Topeka Community Foundation, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
