Joann Elizabeth Vitzthum was born August 28, 1933, in Bancroft, Iowa, the daughter of Raphael and Rosella (Baltz) Welp. She grew up in Bancroft where she attended school graduating from St. John's High School in 1952.
On February 9, 1954, Joann was united in marriage to Jack Vitzthum at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived at Wesley.
Joann enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Minnesota Vikings fan.
She had the best of both worlds with visits that she made with Jack visiting Steve in Minnesota and Paul and family in Arizona. Joann also enjoyed fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, camping, and playing cards. She also enjoyed her many drives through the countryside to observe wildlife and see how the crops were progressing. Joann died Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa, where she had been a resident the last eight years. She was 80 years old.
She is survived by her children, Linda and Don Thul of West Bend; Geri and Jerry Schall of Dakota City; Dave and Jennifer Vitzthum of Humboldt; Steve Vitzthum of Humboldt; Paul and Nancy Vitzthum of Glendale, Arizona; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean and Don Hixson of Des Moines; a brother, George and Barb Welp of Minneapolis, Minnesota also sister-in-laws Carol, Betty and Marie Welp.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack on June 23, 1997; infant daughter, Mary; brothers, Dick, Rocky, Eugene, Phil and Don Welp and a sister, Rosemary Wilcox.
