Notes for Amalia Mae Brockhoff
Amalia was born a a government homestead near Dawson ND. The year she was
born,1 887, the Dakotas had a sever winter. It was reported that the two states
lost nearly half of all their livestock. Teddy Roosevelt was quoted as saying that
he did not think the Dakotas could ever become livestock states.
Drought, heat, cold winters, no fuel, and poor crops caused Amalia's family to
leave North Dakota when she was 8 years old, 1885.
