On 26 July 1891, Albert Theodore Clayton, was born to I.V. & Matilda(Blackburn) Clayton nea r Lexington, MO, where I.V. supported hisfamily by farming. Teddy was number five of seve n children. BothI.V. (who was given no name, only initials) and Teddy contactedMalaria whi le he was just a child. The disease greatly weakened bothof them, and on 6 June 1898, his f ather died of pneumonia nearHardin, MO being only forty-seven years old. His death was poss iblydue in no small part to his already weakened condition.

Matilda then moved her children to Newton County, settling nearRitchey to be close to her br other, James (Bud) Blackburn and hisfamily. Less than four years later, twenty-year-old Rob ert died andonly ten days later, pneumonia claimed his mother also on 10 May 1902.

The children's uncle was unable to care for all the children inaddition to his own family, s o three of them were place in scatteredhomes where they would work for their room & board un til they were ofage. Ted, now ten years old, was taken to live with an elderlycouple, Char les Clemuel and Margaret Drucilla (Schmitt) Powers nearDiamond, MO. He referred to them a s Uncle Clem and Aunt Dru. Hetended their farm, attending Fair View School when the weathe r wastoo bad for him to work in the fields. In exchange for his years oflabor, he was give n a suit of clothes and one hundren dollars &allowed to leave when he was of age. This wa s the standardremuneration established by the state, but because of his affectionfor youn g Ted, Mr. Powers also gave him his pick of the horses.
