James Tallman grew up in Paton, Greene County, Iowa and removed toHarlan with his parants, a nd joined the Army from Harlan ShelbyCounty, Iowa to fight in the Spanish American War. He e nlisted 4 May1898 for two years. His unit, Co. C. of the 51st Regiment, Iowan Inf.was sen t to the Philippines and returned at the end of the War.
While in San Francisco on his way home from the Philippines he met hiswife
Pauline. He convinced her she should return to Iowa and marry himwhich she
did.
Returning to California, he lived in San Jose California for twoyears,
working as a salesman for a Creamery Company. Returned to Iowa andworked
for a building contractor and for a short time on a bridge buildingcrew on
the Rock Island Railroad. When he returned again to California heworked as
Construction Superintendant of building gasoline plants that makegasoline from Natural Oil P roducts until his retirement.
