Obituary for Joseph Herman Welp II:

Joseph Herman Welp II was born on July 22, 1901 at rural Bancroft, Iowa, the son of Joseph H. and Emma (Gulde) Welp. He grew up in Bancroft and was a 1921 graduate of St. John’s High School. In 1923 Joe opened the door to the Welp Produce where he bought eggs, poultry and cream. Joe purchased the Bancroft Hatchery which was located where the Kienitz Decorating store is today, in 1929.

Joe was married to Bernice Wilhelmi on July 8, 1931 at St. John’s Church in Bancroft. He built a new building on the highway for his business in 1935 and went on from there to sell chickens all over the world. He also started the Welp Feed Mill, and in 1957 built an electronic feed mill south of the Hatchery on Highway 169. Joe was presented with the President’s “E” Award in 1970 and was awarded “Poultry Man of the Year” Award in 1979 along with many other honors in the poultry business. Joe retired in 1973 and has been a resident of the Heritage Nursing Home since 1985.

Joe is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Diane) Lensing of East Lansing Michigan and three sons, James of Bancroft, Iowa; Donald and Joseph, both of Spirit Lake, Iowa. There are 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Florette Gales of Vista California and Mrs. Emily Beutler of Las Vegas, Nevada.
