Johann Dietrich left Germany in 1864 on the ship: Maryland that leftBremen and arrived New York 8 September 1864. He was listed on the passenger list asJoh. Diedr. His mother was listed as Adelheid Kleiboeker, age 58 fromHannover; destination: St. Louis. Also listed on the passenger list was her daughter Catherine M. age 16 and according to Glazier and Filby book (known for its errors!) as a son age 14 named Kath. Diedr. I assume this is the son Johann Diedrich who was 14 at the time.
Subsequently Dennis Kruse found the actual copy of the ship Maryland'spassenger list. In clear handwriting, we see that H. Steffens was the Captain of the Bark (type of ship) Maryland. They are listed as Adelheid Kleiboeker (note spelling by the Kleiboekers were now different than spelling (Kleyboeker) what was listed on birth records in Germany. Adelheid is listed as 58 years old (female), Catherine M Kleiboeker (female) listed as 16 years, and Joh. Diedr. Kleiboeker (male) as 14 years old. All three are listed as coming from "Casper Gehrde'. In letter exchanges with Professor Holtmann of Oldenburg University in Germany, that Dennis has on file, Casper was a misinterpretation of "Kirchspiel Gehrde." This basically means coming from the area of the Church community of the village of Gehrde. Casper may be the way a US person understood the platt deutsch pronunciation of Kirchspiel.
